brewing tea, at least, is something that flayn has enough experience with not to screw up. while he works on his dish, she'll work on getting him something to drink. she doesn't speak while they both work - he doesn't seem all that inclined to talk, anyway.
when the tea is ready, she pours him a cup and sets it within reach of him.]
[ as it starts coming together, it becomes clear that he's making okonomiyaki. there is plenty to share, should flayn want some. but if she doesn't ask, he will just. continue to let them cook.
only after a long silence does he finally reach for the tea. ]
[ he continues as if flayn isn't there, finishing the dish and setting it aside to cool a bit before plating. he takes another sip of tea in that moment, and after he sets it down and turns away, there comes another soft, short comment. ]
It isn't bad.
[ that may be the closest to a thank you that she'll get. ]
[ he's still tense, eyes burning with thoughts that kara will never put a voice to. but he does take another sip, before setting the cup down to fetch plates and move the okonomiyaki over. while he won't offer it to flayn, he doesn't move the food away from her either. if she wants it, it's hers. ]
[ah, crap. she really does want some - it looks and smells very good, and she's never seen such a dish before. she certainly isn't yet at the level of skill where she could recreate it.
but she's being good and not eating any food that she didn't prepare herself, so she can honestly tell people who might be worried that she's taking steps to avoid another situation like the one on the island. ...on the other hand, ookurikara is not at all likely to poison her.
surely a small bite couldn't hurt..?
...she's silent as she debates that with herself.]
[ it's as he chews the second bite of his own meal that kara realizes something is off. he was told that flayn wanted to learn to make her own meals, but not why, so... he simply watches her for a moment before turning back to his plate. ]
Eat. We'll need all our strength tomorrow.
[ why dos he say that like they're going into battle. ]
[She'll remember that, and will probably request a lesson on how to make it once, you know, they're not reeling from the shock of discovering his friend(?) was killed.]

she doesn't speak, either. she won't force him to talk about it, but... she isn't sure it would be helpful for him to be alone. not now.
when he reaches for the tea, she relaxes slightly.]

Thank you.
[she hopes it will help him to relax, even if just a little - but can anyone really relax right now? particularly him?]

it's fine, isn't it? ...it's fine.
she reaches for it and takes a small bite.]
...this is delicious, Chef Ookurikara.

he just nods, completely unaware of her fears. it's fine. ]

flayn won't speak, either, but she'll eat slowly so she has an excuse to linger in case he does decide he needs someone.]

it's fine. he'll eventually finish the tea, too, and get to cleaning when the meal is done. ]

(not really. tsuru is still dead.)
when it's time to clean up, she moves to help him silently. too bad this isn't happening earlier when they could have counted it as a task!]

...Thank you.

but, no, that was real. her voice is equally quiet when she responds.]
You are welcome.
[she just wishes she could do more.]
