[It's fine neither do you or I, really. Case in point; me pulling gun mechanics out of my ass because I only know how bolt action rifles work. Ogata takes the gun from her hands, for a moment.]
You have to lift the hammer here and rotate the chamber in the middle here, so that there's a bullet in line with a barrel. See how this section is empty now? [He turns the gun in her direction, showing how the chamber of the six-shooter is empty now, because I decided it's a peacemaker arbitrarily.
Then he turns his hand away, holding it out straight and effortlessly sending a shot into the center of their haphazard moss target. When he fires, you can barely see the recoil, and that's without a hand to steady his shooting arm. He hands the gun back to her.]
[Flayn supposes that makes sense. She nods, and when he hands the gun back, she lifts the hammer and rotates the chamber, then sets it all back into place and aims.
This time, she hits closer to the center of the moss.
Maybe at this short range. But the trajectories of arrows and bullets are affected differently by weather conditions. Not to mention bows don't have the same range firearms do.
[Unslinging his rifle again, flipping open the sight, pointing to, numbers marked off on it in increments of 200.] You see? The ladder sight on my rifle goes up to 2400 meters. I bet your bows can't shoot nearly that far.
No? Some people might tell you that's a good thing. Firearms completely changed the way men fight wars. Some people say that his rapid addition of arquebus units to his army was a major factor in how a small-time warlord like Oda Nobunaga was able to conquer half of Japan.
[He is just a font of knowledge when it comes to guns.] Most men couldn't land an accurate shot from that distance, though. Even I couldn't guarantee anything from that range. Still, I have an effective range that outpaces most people.
[Well, he looks.... pretty happy with that. Flayn found the one thing he takes pride in.]
I'm confident I'm the best sniper in the 7th Division if not the entire army. If we could find a rifle in the gun room that has some ammunition in it, I could show you. [The question is does Flayn want to see him show off.]
[Well, that's the only motivation he needs to trot back into the gun room.]
Come here a moment, I'll show you how to remove the bolt on rifles like mine, that way you can check to see if they're loaded. [unslinging his rifle again, and turning the bolt before sliding it out and gesturing to the empty chamber.]
See, mine's empty. If you find one with cartridges in it, let me know.
[back to the gun room they go, then! flayn watches as he turns the bolt and slides it out. she doesn't know what the cartridges are supposed to look like, but she imagines the difference between an empty chamber and a full one will be pretty stark, so!
[Peering over her shoulder, before taking the gun out of her hands.]
Good work. This'll do. Let's head outside, I can get a better range to shoot from out there. [Out he's trotting. He seems a bit excited about the prospect of showing off.]
[WELL WHEN SHE SAYS IT LIKE THAT!!! He takes a short pit stop in the kitchen on their way up and out of the basement before they go outside. Apple acquired. He hands it to Flayn before he starts trudging across the yard. He is walking... very very far away?? Ogata.]
Anyway, Ogata stops when he's about 200 meters away. Well within his claimed guaranteed headshot range. This target is smaller than a human head, after all. But he still wants to show off. He drops into his signature shooting position, sighting down the barrel of the gun. He actually doesn't aim at Flayn first. He hasn't used this particular gun before, so he shifts focus to a tree near where she's standing and plugs two shots into the bark, getting a sense of the rifle and it's particular inclination.
And then, after a quiet few seconds, he adjusts and points the gun in Flayn's direction. Without any warning, he fires. It's just a moment later the bullet thunks into the apple and falls to the ground off of Flayn's head.]
[I ask myself that every day I have been deliberately putting her in danger so someone will decide she's an easy target and finish her off and that hasn't gotten me anywhere!!!
Anyway. Flayn should probably be more nervous about this than she is, but she's not. Instead, she's just kind of excited to see what he'll do, and she stays perfectly still as he fires two shots into the tree before turning the gun on her.
A moment later, the bullet strikes the apple and it falls to the ground. Her whole face lights up.]
Marvelous! You truly are a skilled marksman, Ogata!
[The problem is that she is too precious and kind and even top tier bastards like Ogata don't want to harm her.
Anyway it takes Ogata a moment to walk over to her, and he's honestly surprised by her enthusiasm. But he also looks pleased? Turns out the cat man responds well to praise? Who could have guessed.]
Of course. I wouldn't lie about something like that.

Now you do it.

Beginner's luck, honestly.]

You seem to have a surprising knack for it, given you don't seem the type to want to shoot anyone.
[Just a general reminder of what Guns are For.]

[not to mention the recoil.]

I believe I may have found something, Ogata!

What will you shoot at?

[This is probably a joke but... also maybe not?]

[SHOOT AN APPLE OFF HER HEAD, OGATA.]
no subject
...Probably.
[A beat, because he really wasn't expecting her to agree to that.]
Do you really trust me to not simply just shoot you instead?

And what if I miss?
[SERIOUSLY, FLAYN, DON'T LET HIM DO THIS.]
