Not the first week. The first week, it was... reviewing.
[she frowns slightly.]
The second, it was darts. That was when I knew, but - I did not know how to communicate it to anyone. Every time I tried, I was stopped... because it would have made it obvious I had a role, I think.
The third week, I was given the opportunity to review again, and send a letter. I was able to have it written anonymously, so it... was allowed, I suppose. [...] But I did not write it. I spoke it.
This week... it was darts, again. I wonder if, perhaps, I will go back to reviewing next week.
[he is realizing he should've asked more about her role when he first found her, but hey. there's no time like BEING SAD OVER SANJI BEING DEAD to bond over their special tasks]
I was not able to review every week, so... I would like to use it on someone who seems likely to have a role, if it is available to me again, but who has not yet been confirmed.
[she likes his idea!]
Was there anyone that you and Sanji had discussed checking in the future...?
...truthfully, part of me wants to check Dimitri. If he has some kind of a role, and I would not have to keep secrets from him... that would be wonderful.

[it killed her to deny having sent that one.]
no subject
Then. . . how did you know that Escha was innocent?
no subject
[she wishes she had a better explanation than that, but she does not. it sounds a little ridiculous even to her ears.]
no subject
[lets out a breathless noise at that, lifting a hand to rake his fingers through his hair]
Your role really is something, isn't it?
no subject
[was it trinkets?? or crabs?? SHE DOESN'T KNOW.]
no subject
Do you play darts every week, then?
no subject
[she frowns slightly.]

What does "reviewing" entail, exactly?
[he is realizing he should've asked more about her role when he first found her, but hey. there's no time like BEING SAD OVER SANJI BEING DEAD to bond over their special tasks]
no subject
[...]
I do not know if, should I pick someone with a role, I would learn that. I would... imagine not, since that was...
[That was Sanji's role.]
no subject
[there's a fond note in his voice when he mentions Sanji, but it's broken up by the slightest crack. that loss is still so, so fresh]
But it's worth trying, isn't it? Finding someone you think might have a role. . . and reviewing them, just in case?
[she could always test it on him, but since she can't review every week, he fears it might be a bit of a waste]
no subject
[she likes his idea!]
Was there anyone that you and Sanji had discussed checking in the future...?
no subject
[after this conversation he will have two more suggestions but that can be in the later PC]
What about you?
no subject
[she's so tired of secrets.]
But that is me being selfish, I suppose.
no subject
No. I think that's a good idea, too.
And even better if he turns out to be someone we can talk to.
no subject
[gods, she hopes it turns out well]
Have you thought about who you want to protect?
no subject
Mm. I have.
It's you, actually.
no subject
[she looks shocked - and then she shakes her head]
no subject
[there's no hesitation in his voice when he says that]
You were right. I should've shielded Sanji. I didn't because I thought he'd be safe-- because I thought. . .
[he trails off]
[and he shakes his head]
I don't want to make that same mistake again.
no subject
[...okay, she can understand that, but. she doesn't look all that happy about the idea of being protected, either.]
What reason do you have to believe that someone might try to harm me, though? Everyone... everyone here has been exceptionally kind to me.
no subject
I didn't think there was a reason for anyone to harm Sanji, either.
[annnnnd now]
no subject
Still... I do not know that I could live with it, if I was kept safe and someone else died.
no subject
[. . .]
[and he understands that. he really does. he doesn't blame her for feeling that way, because he knows he would feel that way, too]
[and yet. . .]
. . . then maybe I'm just being a little selfish.
no subject
If that is the choice you want to make, I... cannot take that choice from you. But... I do hope you will at least consider what I have said.
[...]
It is okay to be selfish, sometimes. If that brings you peace.
no subject
I will.
[he always considered what Sanji had to say on the subject, after all. but listening to Sanji is the reason Sanji died, so. . . it's difficult]
If there's anyone else you think might be in grave danger next week, let me know by Monday. Otherwise--
I think I will protect you. Okay?
no subject
[she nods once]
I— only hope that I will not be too late, if I do figure something out.
