[It's best to create as much distance between you and someone with a weapon as possible is a funny thing to say to someone who, prior to all of these murdergames, spent a good chunk of her day being taught to go to war, but Flayn nods. She's ready.
...being attacked personally is a bit different than meeting an enemy on the field of battle when you both know you'll be going there.
She watches his movements, her expression turning serious as he approaches. She's listening to his instructions, but she's not responding, because she's repeating them over in her mind.
When he draws close enough, she moves quickly - ducking down, gripping his elbow and forearm, and then looking up at him for her next instructions.]
anyway, the grab is good and strong! so. ] In a normal situation, no one will walk. So, once you grab on, pull downwards as hard as you can. [ the "knife" is hovering over her head, so -- when she pulls, yin yu will fake the motion for her, slowly demonstrating how the amount of force can pull someone off of their feet and flip them over. the twig doesn't fall out of his hand when he fakes the fall, but it's pointed safely away, at least for a second. congrats flayn you can learn how to flip somebody over today.]
Being dropped like that will stun just about anyone for a moment, and give them a disadvantage in trying to retaliate. It's just a moment, but you can use that to kick the knife away. [ he flexes his fingers, briefly still holding the twig. ] If they won't let go, you can stomp on their wrist. Even if it's not well aimed, it will still hurt enough that most people should release the knife. You can kick it far away, or grab it for yourself.
[It all makes a certain amount of sense. Flayn thinks to herself that kicking the knife away would probably be better - or would picking it up be? If she kicked it away, could whoever she disarmed beat her to it and pick it up again?
Maybe she should just grab it and run.
(Hopefully she'll never have to decide this in real time.)]
—ah! Yes, but... I do not wish to hurt you. [Her brow creases with concern.] It will not be painful for you if I manage to succeed, will it?
his tone's gentle when he says it; he would not be surprised if flayn was like suddenly freakishly strong (she's enough like dianxia, anyway) but being a generally martial person means he's used to it. besides, getting flipped over by students is basically a part of training.
with that reassurance, he steps back a few feet, picking the twig back up. a pause. ] I'll be sure to let go, so there won't be any need to stomp down, if we get that far.
[ don't break his wrist ok.
anyway. after a moment, he moves forward, into striking distance -- yin yu is very quick, and he goes at half speed or so to not be overwhelming, but it's fast, and he lunges forward with the twig. ]
But when Yin Yu comes at her, Flayn reacts as though it is one. In a fistfight, she's fairly useless. But she's light and quick, and she's trained to dodge strikes when she can see them coming. Without thinking, she quickly and gracefully sidesteps his approach, then pivots to face him, backing up a few steps to put some distance between them.
when she pivots, yin yu's instincts kick in, and he's already moved too, barely a blur of black to be out of sight again, behind her, arm lifted as if to strike; he's also left surprised, blinking kind of stupidly at the back of her head. that was an incredibly graceful dodge on her part. flayn is, as ever, full of surprises. ]
Hah. [ he laughs on his exhale and drops the position of his martial style. there's a little light to his eyes; surprising, but not at all displeased. ] Lady Flayn, are you sure you need me to teach you? That was excellent.
[ oh-- he doesn't quite shrink at the praise, but shakes his head, as humble as anything and quick to dispel it, especially with the look on her face. he's definitely not worth that... ] No, no. It's just many years of practice, that's all.
[ also he probably would've been eaten by a wrath level ghost or something by this point otherwise.... it's a survival trait...
her request isn't unheard, though, and yin yu steps back again properly, making space between them and preparing his 'weapon'. ] Alright, then. If you're ready.
[ let's try this again! at the same slowed speed, he comes at her with the twig! ]
[Many years of hard work is more like it, but Flayn will let it be for now, since they still have training to do.
She narrows her eyes and watches as he gets into position to begin. She's poised to move when she needs to - and this time, as he approaches, she drops down, grips his arm tightly by the forearm and the elbow, and focuses her strength and her energy on flipping him.
Her grip is firm, but not exactly viselike. Still, she's trying to make use of his momentum to send him flying.]
[ there we go. her grip's not quite tight enough. his motions are confident and quick; in a real fight, he would have gone for a counterstrike with his free arm, but in this case, he's able to pull both of them downward, so the 'knife' makes contact with her thigh when he takes a step forward, much closer to flayn's bubble than yin yu would ever put himself in any other situation. ]
Careful. [ a little tap of the twig. he doesn't feel like he needs to explain the danger of an artery stabbing. even so, his tone's steady and calm, more encouraging than anything else. despite yin yu's general lack of confidence, he is a good teacher, and he always was. it was something he missed greatly, when it stopped. ] Try to grab on even tighter this time. It won't hurt me, I promise.
[ even if it does, he's not going to say anything about it. anyway!! disengaging, he'll give her the chance to try again, giving advice after each turn.... after however many times so we dont just write the same tags over and over. ]
[Well, Flayn isn't quite expecting that, and it's easy for him to pull her downward. She glances between the twig where he's tapping her thigh up to his face. Her cheeks are a little flushed, but that's... from the exertion, maybe. It's fine. Don't worry about it.
More importantly, Yin Yu isn't flustered. He's a very good teacher, and what he's explaining makes sense, so she nods to herself as they both get back into position to try again.
[ definitely from the exertion! this is not an easy lesson and requires a lot of hard work. it gets the blood pumping, and by the end of it, it feels like they've made some progress--not to mention, his adrenaline's pumping proper, and it's set him in what has to be a pretty good mood. he really likes the martial arts of cultivation--there were many reasons that he worked so hard--and it's nice to use it like he used to, in his sect days. yin yu shone his best when he was shixiong
he gives her a smile, more relaxed than usual, and drops their little fake knife, then presses his hand to his fist for a bow, polite. ] It was my pleasure, Lady Flayn - you're an excellent student.
It would be wise to stretch this evening, and eat something as well, so you don't wake too sore. It can be difficult on the body to practice new motions.
[She watches how he places his hands, then mimics the motion to bow to him in return.]
The pleasure was all mine... you are an excellent teacher.
[They'll have to do this again sometime. Flayn hopes that they can - even if she never ends up having to use this here, it's good to keep her skills sharp, and it's even better to be able to spend time with a friend.]

Flayn blinks, and Yin Yu is already behind her. Slowly, she turns to face him, and takes note of his raised hand.]
