But here he is, wandering with some intent, rapidly searching his own mind for a safe place to pass out. To be hidden. Safe. Until tomorrow.
He has people to live for.
And it’s that thought that makes him wish, more than anything, that the sound of voices hadn’t drawn him over, to warn, to ask to hide, until it was too late to mistake what they were saying.
One of his steps breaks a twig underfoot, and they’ll be aware he’s there all at once startled and pale, hands empty. In an instant a few emotions pass over his face, shock and disappointment, before a complete calm overtakes him from head to toe. ]
.... apologies. I didn’t mean to interrupt. [ soft. colorless. without reproach. ]
Flayn goes still, and her expression is stricken as she turns in the direction of the sound of the twig snapping. Moments later, he speaks, and she takes a step back, looking vaguely ill.]
Yu..? Why are you here—? You... y-you should be in your cabin!
[ Shinobu likewise freezes. Before she turns to face him, something bleak and like heartbreak crosses her features once the shock fades. By the time she fully looks at him, she's just as composed. ]
He knows, then. Or at least suspects, that they're out here to kill. And he expects that he'll fall under their knife.
Flayn hadn't thought about it until that moment. She swallows hard, her mouth suddenly dry. He's not wrong about that, either. He's seen them. If anyone turns up dead tomorrow, and Yu is still alive, and he tells someone—
She's trembling. She shakes her head, wishing this wasn't happening, and finds she can't muster up a single word to say to him. She looks like she's going to be sick.]
[ She looks at Yu in alarm. Is that the conclusion he arrived at? Something shifts in her expression, and her heart sinks. He isn't even putting up a fight or trying to stop them. That's the worst thing about this.
He's telling them to stay safe, stay alive, be strong—
Shinobu goes very still, very silent for a brief moment before her expression twists again in frustration and a great sadness. ]
Seeing the horror and sorrow in their faces makes his heart break. It’s so clear they don’t want to do this—how much it’s hurting them. Somehow, despite the fact that he knows he likely won’t get out of this alive ... he still can’t help but feel a sympathetic pang. What a horrible position they’re in.
.... but then, why are they here in the first place .... ? ]
.... I just wish I knew why you — no, that’s not what’s important. I’ll be alright, one way or another. Please know I’m truly sorry. I’m the one whose carelessness put both of you in this terrible position.
Whatever happens, I believe in all of—
