Because we are an incredibly fickle group, and no one wants to accept their loved ones dying whether or not they volunteered.

That said, the fact that the vote landed on someone who didn't even volunteer themselves speaks greatly of the power of saying things that people don't want to hear only a few minutes before our time limit.
